Ì´ War Ì´
The sound of voices carrying on the cool night air was the only reason I left Avalon to her peaceful slumber so I could investigate.
âRemain with the lamb,â I instruct my companion. A soft sigh pulls my attention back to the lamb, who rolls to the space I just vacated while tucking the blanket under her chin prior to inhaling my scent. âKeep her safe.â
With as much caution as my gigantic frame can manage, I creep through the thickest part of the tree line. Moving closer to the source of the conversation, which is apparently about my brothers and me.
âYou got that shit straight.â
âHell yeah. Weâre going to put those fucking riders down.â
âWell, first thingâs first, we have to catch up with Wayneâs group. After we find them, weâll need to fortify, stock the stronghold, and train everyone.â Thank you for sharing your plans. It will make destroying you so much simpler. I continue circling the group of men to assess their weaknesses. Twelve sons of Adam surround the fire. Two are sleeping, five hold weapons, and one has only seen sixteen summers. Too bad he will not make it to seventeen since it was he who advised they would put us down. Which I will assume means he plans to attempt the impossible and kill us.
âWe shouldnât be taking these riders lightly. Especially since we know their entire reason for existing is removing humanity.â
âIf youâre so damn scared of these fuckers, why donât you hide behind your mommaâs apron strings, Kenny?â This young one has grit, yet little else. And if the glare he receives from the one he called Kenny is any clue, I believe he is about to discover bravery is not everything, nor will it take a rider to put him down. Fortune seems to shine on this fool since it appears he has a brother of his own. One tasked with watching over this naïve son of Adam.
âBaby steps, little brother.â His brother positions himself between Kenny and the mouthy one. If I had to guess the way Kenny withdraws when the foolâs brother advances, I would say he may represent a worthy foe and one with both fortitude and intellect.
âFuck that. I wish one of those assholes was here now because I would have no issues ending him. Painfully.â If this is how he feels, then far be it from me to deny this foolish mortal his wish. Their heads all whip in my direction as I step out.
âYes, please, by all means⦠tell me how you plan to kill my brother and me.â Every son of Adam jumps to his feet, and the ones with weapons draw them to level in my direction.
âWho the fuck are you?â the worthy foe demands, bringing his sword up from his waist, making me reconsider my previous assessment of him. In war, it is best not to take such an aggressive stance until you are aware of who you are dealing with and what their arrival represents to your survival.
